"I'll take the boy!"
In one of the anecdotes featured in Hoover's Gold, Betty Solosy tells how her father Joseph Sleeman was a 13-year-old office boy while Hoover was managing the Sons of Gwalia gold mine. One day, Hoover came into the mine office and announced he was going to play a round of golf. Looking around for someone to be his caddy, he noticed young Joseph and declared, "I'll take the boy!" Like Hoover, Sleeman went on to a career in politics, becoming the Member for Fremantle in Western Australia's parliament.
